Study reveals that Portuguese people pay an average of 92 euros per month for health insurance.

Portuguese people who pay for their health insurance cover, on average, about 92 euros per month, with most of them having taken out this type of protection less than five years ago, as revealed in a survey cited in the Notícias ao Minuto website. Notícias ao Minuto

The study belongs to the Health Insurance Observatory and was shared by the Insurance and Pension Funds Supervisory Authority (ASF). "The majority of respondents stated having health insurance for less than five years, reflecting a dynamic market," with "27% having it for more than 10 years," it begins to reveal.

In another sense, more than half of those surveyed stated that they "benefit from some health insurance (32%), complementary health subsystem (21%) or health plan (11%)", of which "like in 2023, they tend to be younger, more educated, and have higher incomes than the average population." 

The survey reveals main reason for hiring insurance: The difficulty of access to the National Health Service (SNS), say 34% of respondents. For 53% of respondents, the insurance coverage also includes the family unit and payment is made "directly by themselves or family members in 55% of cases and by the employer in 36%".

Regarding the average value of the monthly premium, "among the individuals who bear the cost (or household members)", this amounts to about 92 euros.

"The overall satisfaction, service quality and level of trust remain high (7.9 out of 10 points)", however "those who do not have insurance attribute a lower level of trust (6.1 points)".

Afterwards, the number of respondents who accessed the NHS and the private sector increased significantly by 10 percentage points compared to 2023, reaching 35%.

"For the first time, the use of telemedicine services was evaluated," with "only 10% of respondents reported having used these services in the last 12 months."

This survey was conducted between November and December 2024 and involved the participation of 800 residents in Portugal "aged 18 or older," with a margin of error for the proportion of 3.5 percentage points, as mentioned in the news.
