More than half of new home loans belong to young people.

The total of new loans to individuals increased by 308 million euros, reaching 2,774 million. Only in housing credit, the new contracts grew by 265 million, to a total of 1,951 million euros - the second highest value since records began in December 2014, as reported by Notícias ao Minuto citing the disclosure from the Bank of Portugal (BdP).

According to BdP, "credit granted to borrowers aged 35 or under represented 56% of the amount of new contracts for permanent own housing (excluding consolidations and credit transfers), which represents an increase of two percentage points compared to February."

In consumer credit, the amount of new contracts increased by 18 million euros, totaling 585 million - the highest value since the beginning of the historical series in December 2014.

Already in credit for other purposes, there was an increase of 25 million euros, reaching 237 million.

Debt renegotiations amounted to 471 million euros, 35 million less than the previous month.

This reduction was reflected in both new and renegotiated contracts, with average rates falling by 0.05 and 0.10 percentage points, respectively, now standing at 3.05% and 3.39%.
