The tax, popularly known as the "car stamp", will no longer be paid in the month corresponding to the vehicle registration. Instead, there will be a single date for all taxpayers.
According to the Government, if the IUC value is up to 100 euros, the payment will be made in full in February. For amounts over 100 euros, the tax will be divided into two equal installments, paid in February and October.
Currently, the IUC is settled in the month the vehicle was registered, causing problems for many taxpayers. "Many people forget the month they bought the car, whether new or second-hand, resulting in delays and fines," explained the Minister of Finance, Miranda Sarmento.
The new model aims to simplify the process and avoid forgetfulness. The measure will only take effect in 2026, and the Motor Vehicle Tax (IUC) will be calculated based on the vehicle owner at the end of the previous year.
