If you have lost your documents, the Bank of Portugal (BdP) offers in the banking system, at the request of individuals, information on the loss, theft, robbery, counterfeiting, forgery or illegal use of personal identification documents.
Furthermore, according to the Notícias ao Minuto, the same applies to information regarding "recovery, replacement or other changes related to the status or validity" of identification documents that have been the subject of a previous request.
"The personal identification documents covered by the service are as follows: citizen card, identity card, passport, authorization or title of residence," the news reads.
Therefore, "individuals must make a new request to the Bank of Portugal whenever the recovery, replacement, or other alteration of the state or validity of the personal identification documents that prompted a diffusion request is verified."
The Bank of Portugal will disseminate this new request throughout the banking system, it can be read.
Also note that, "under normal conditions, the Bank of Portugal informs the banking system about the loss or recovery of personal identification documents within a maximum period of five working days after the respective request for dissemination".
Not all situations are included
According to the news website, the BdP warns that "this service does not cover situations of loss, theft, robbery, counterfeiting, forgery or illegal use of bank cards, checks or other means of payment", so "in these situations, the respective holders should contact, as soon as possible, the issuing entity of these means of payment".
How to use this service?
In order to request the information from BdP about their personal identification documents, it is necessary:
- Fill out and submit the electronic form available on the Banking Client Portal; or
- Print and manually fill out the form provided. Submit the completed form at a Banco de Portugal service center.
"Regardless of the form used to request the service, always attach to the request the auto or statement from the police or judicial entity that attests to the occurrence," reads the note at the end.
